چکیده

The purpose of this study is to examine whether reasoners have two cognitive processes, the causal strength and the reliability, and how the processes work in causal judgments. In an experiment, participants’ causal judgments were varied depending on the conditions, which were introduced to activate either one of the two processes, as well as on the cell configurations between causes and effects. The results suggested the two different cognitive processes were involved in causal judgments and their interaction occurred in case a higher accuracy is needed. It is proposed that theories on causal reasoning should give regards to the reliability of data.

Inference processes in causal analogies

In recent papers, Lee & Holyoak (2007, 2008a, 2008b) argue that extant models of analogy fail to explain how people draw inferences from causal analogies. In the current research, we argue that structure-mapping theory sufficiently explains the analogical inferences drawn from these causal analogies, and that, contrary to L&H‘s claims, the effect inference can indeed be evaluated by a post-anal...

There aren't plenty more fish in the sea: a causal network approach.

The current research investigated how lay representations of the causes of an environmental problem may underlie individuals' reasoning about the issue. Naïve participants completed an experiment that involved two main tasks. The causal diagram task required participants to depict the causal relations between a set of factors related to overfishing and to estimate the strength of these relation...

Causal Asymmetry in Inductive Judgments

We propose a normative model of inductive reasoning about causal arguments, those in which there is a direct causal relation between categories. The model derives inductive judgments from a causal Bayesian network that represents the causal structure of the argument. It supports inferences in the causal direction (e.g. a mother is drug-addicted, how likely is it that her newborn baby is drug-ad...

Causation and Conditionals in the Cognitive Science of Human Reasoning

This article traces the philosophical and psychological connections between causation and the conditional, if...then, across the two main paradigms used in conditional reasoning, the selection task and the conditional inference paradigm. It is argued that hypothesis testing in the selection task reflects the philosophical problems identified by Quine and Goodman for the material conditional int...

Decision Making Using Learned Causal Structures

Decision making and causal reasoning are clearly relevant for one another, but have often been studied in relative isolation. In this paper, we report the results of two experiments that investigated whether people can make appropriate decisions using causal beliefs learned from sequences of cases. We found that people behave close-to-optimally for various causal and payoff structures, even tho...
